Originally written in Chinese by Tianqi Liu, the play was translated and adapted by Julia He and Xuewei Eva Hu. Julia reshaped the story into a poetic, multimedia performance that resonated deeply with a new cultural audience. It’s highlighting her talent for adapting emotionally rich material across language and context.

Set in a near-future care facility, Brazil follows a boy in a coma, his robot caretaker, and a puppet that speaks his inner voice. Through haunting interactions, flickers of consciousness, and desperate Morse-code blinking, the boy begins to confront the limits of automated care and the unbearable loneliness of being unheard.​

Playground is a unique CMU School of Drama tradition that pauses the academic calendar and gives students full creative freedom to take risks and create.
Current Project: Shakespeare’s R&J

Julia’s connection to Shakespeare’s R&J is personal and deep. She has worked on four separate productions of the play—first as an audience member, then as a Production Assistant, then Assistant Stage Manager, and finally as the Stage Manager for its 2024 revival in Shanghai. Now, she brings this experience full circle as producer for a bold new interpretation.

This version of Shakespeare’s R&J reimagines Joe Calarco’s adaptation with original music, symbolic staging, and a cross-cultural design team. The production explores themes of identity, repression, and awakening through theatrical language that transcends borders.
